Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen to a new DApps.Buzz Review. Yes, it was a long time ago the last one I’ve written, so here is one that is more than overdue: LBRY.
So let’s start right away with what the project builders say about LBRY in their FAQs.
For most users, LBRY will be a place where they can find great videos, music, ebooks, and more: imagine a vast digital library that is available on all of your devices. But under the hood, LBRY is many components working together.
First and foremost, LBRY is a new protocol that allows anyone to build apps that interact with digital content on the LBRY network. Apps built using the protocol allow creators to upload their work to the LBRY network of hosts (like BitTorrent), to set a price per stream or download (like iTunes) or give it away for free (like YouTube without ads). The work you publish could be videos, audio files, documents, or any other type of file.
Traditional video (or other content) sites such as YouTube, Instagram, and Spotify store your uploads on their servers and allow viewers to download them. They also allow creators to make some money through advertising or other mechanisms. However, there are some well-known drawbacks, especially for people whose material is perceived as not being advertiser-friendly.
LBRY aims to be an alternative to these sites, allowing publishers and their fans to interact directly without the risk of demonetization or other meddling.
What makes this all possible is the blockchain technology developed by the creator of Bitcoin.
Do you have to understand any of this to use and enjoy LBRY? No. Does it still matter to users? Yes!Source: https://lbry.com/faq/what-is-lbry
And now that we know their idea behind the project let’s see how it runs. Let’s start with the review:
USABILITY: Simply Complex!
There is a lot to talk about the system’s complexity. How the blockchain works under the hood, or how the content delivers to the people. You can dive into this topic by reading through the LBRY Foundations website. I focus just on the usability here, and it’s different from various perspectives.
While the Smartphone app runs smoothly with a battery-draining blockchain service that has to run in the background, a website can navigate and share videos as straightforward as YouTube.
And then, there is the desktop piece of software that you want to run, as soon you want to get real with LBRY, or at least when you want to keep your wallet safe.
The different entry points are a bit distracting for newcomers, even if I see its necessity. It makes the experience less flawless as it is with YouTube, but the other points trump.
REWARDS: Content is King! But everybody matters.
The rewards system is fantastic. You upload your piece of content, for free or with fees, and then let users watch, read, listen, whatever the amount of content is. People then can tip for your content (which works primarily with the community there).
I wrote an article once about how easy it is to make money with LBRY, and till today, a lot changed. To the positive. Everything is faster and better, so that publishing content is even more comfortable than ever. Please read it HERE; you can start right away with that simple Tutorial!
No matter if you’re a visitor or a content creator, you will receive rewards for using the LBRY platform. So join today if you didn’t know till now.
So there is nothing to say; you get paid for your content and for being a consumer. It’s 10 out of 10.
CONTENT: Good, but wish you were here…
Remember that Rednecks track? No, I’m not asking for more Rednecks, but I miss some great content creators from other platforms. But I encounter more and more of them from day today. And since the connection and automation between YouTube and LBRY are easy as 1, 2, 3, content creators can implement the content-upload an effortless way.
This possibility is smart and helps people to join LBRY without the need to change their central platform. But I miss a bit the marketing in this direction, to get more content creators on the forum. So people, let’s use this article here to make some noise in YouTubes direction—more at the bottom of this review.
COMMUNITY: Freedom of Speech matters, sometimes.
There are a lot of Crypto people on LBRY, which is excellent. Many people enjoy sharing their political views, which I can hide, like a lot of conspiracists. And then there are a few of my favorite YouTubers that are also on LBRY.
Did I mention the NSFW part? I know… We don’t talk about such things, except you’re called Sheepgod. But I want to let you know; you can hide or show NSFW content.
The people on LBRY, no matter what content they’re producing, sharing, or viewing, they share all the same love to LBRY. And this makes it one of the most supportive communities out there. It’s the community that votes for the content on LBRY and how it evolves. And till now, this works well.
Just the spam in the comments could be less; there are many scams out there, like on every decentralized project. But there seems to be a way to fix it, as soon the comments system is also on the blockchain and not off-chain anymore.
UNIQUENESS: It’s what we need more than ever before. Period.
Once YouTube was unique. It moved us away from the TV to get that content from the people. Today the content is advertising, between the advertising. I have 6 to 12 ads on a 6-minute video on YouTube, making the YouTube experience worse than watching TV. What was once revolutionary today is just an advertising platform for advertisers and people who advertise in their content.
With a platform like LBRY, the content matters. And nothing else. If you produce good content and have followers, then you have success. If you want to watch content without ads, then you will be happy there. And if you’re going to support the content creators that YOU want, then you do it.
And because this is what we need nowadays, it’s also here a 10 out of 10. I know there are other projects like this one, more or less successful. And there is BitTorrent in the pipe. But as long there is nothing out there that does the job better, LBRY will remain on top of them.
